A Sonic Scalpel, not referring to the medical devise, is a sonic weapon have devastating power but often surgical accuracy. It is effectively a sonic 'laser'. A Scalpel works by generating and polarizing sonic vibrations to such an extent as to agitate air molecules, generating heat and thus light, in its path. Such weapons can cut through typical metals like steel or iron better than a hot knife through butter.
Their effectiveness changes with the environment with unstable atmosphere (bad weather) or low atmospheres hamper their effectiveness. Like all sonic weapons, they are useless in space.
There are lesser versions which do not cut but knock back the target with brute force called Sonic Rays.
